"WARRIOR’S FAREWELL - KRIEGERS ABSCHIED" |
||||
During World War I in Austria-Hungary soldier's songs were collected (some recorded) in commission of the War-Ministry by musicians and composers like Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály and Bernhard Paumgartner. This video-clip presents one example of these songs "Warrior's Farewell - Kriegers Abschied" in a performance of ARBOS-Company for Music & Theatre by Rupert Bergmann (Bass Baritone) at the former frontline of World War I at the Valentinalm near the Plöckenpass in Austria: "KRIEGERS ABSCHIED: Lebet wohl es ruft die Stunde / Muß zum Kampfe fort von hier / Still die Thräne heil die Wunde / Und den letzten Kuß gib mir / Mädchen leb´ wohl wir seh´n uns bald wieder / Stille die Thränen und weine nicht mehr / Mädchen leb´ glücklich draußen warten die Brüder / Mache den Kriegern das Herze nicht schwer. - WARRIOR’S FAREWELL: I say “Good Bye”, the bell tolls me / I must do the duty, have to go to war / Don’t cry, control Yourself / And the last kiss give to me / Good bye my Girl, we will see each other again soon / Stop Your tears and weep no more / My girl be happy, outside the comrades in arms wait for me / Make the farewell to the warriors not difficult. // But the bell has tolled / Come to me my sweetheart / Don’t worry / We see each soon, this heals any pain / Where sword fights against sword / There You should be the Guardian Angel to me / If I am surrounded by death and destruction / I would fight with God for my love alone. // Why you hit me so strongly To Your chest / Only for you my beloved, I will fight / Because the fight is my pleasure / But soon you will give me the victor’s laurels / With laurel adorned his faithful head / If even tears in your eyes shine / Thanks to your words, if the joy should be robbed." |
