Kreuter „Paintings to ‚The Strangers’ by Dzevad Karahasan“ Opening Day In the year 2001 at the 2nd European and International ARBOS Deaf Theatre Festival in the “Theater des Augenblicks” in Vienna the comedy „The Strangers“ by Dzevad Karahasan got it´s world premiere. This mystic comedy by Dzevad Karahasan is part three of a trilogy of dramas „Dialogues on the Border“ including also „Al-Mukaffa“ and „The Delighted Angel“. The comedy „The Strangers“ takes place somewhere in the western world. From a strange country a man comes in the strange environment of the western culture. The man is very ambitious. Like a gambler in a casino he wants to get everything or nothing. He dreams to become a millionaire and star in the western world. But during a party of marriage he is accused to have done a massacre, a mass murder. So his career starts in prison guided by an agent, a character like a guardian angel. His biography becomes to be a bestseller. He is a creator, a costume designer and writer. So indeed he is now a recognized member of the western world. But at the end his own career stops his ambitious life. ARBOS presented this comedy in 2002 in three sold out performances in Washington D.C. at the arts festival of „Deaf Way II“. Now the deaf visual artist Arnold Kreuter has created paintings through the rehearsals of the performance. These paintings are presented during the festival at the entrance hall of the theatre. Arnold Kreuter remembers the process of painting: “This paintings were created very spontaneous, because I was in the dark auditorium of the theatre and I could not see the colours, so I had to feel for them. During the rehearsal I could not realise how the paintings will be. The actors rehearsed and they could not see me. The rehearsal went on very fast, the changes of the set on stage took only every time some seconds. So I had to be also very fast with the creation of my paintings and to be careful with colours, brush and paper. At the end I had not enough paper for more paintings.” |

in His Pockets“ A play by Marie Jones Translated by Harry Rowohlt Translated into Austrian Sign Language by Horst Dittrich Arbos – Company for Music and Theatre (Austria) Directed, designed and produced by: Herbert Gantschacher Signmaster: Horst Dittrich Cast: Werner Mössler (deaf) plays the following characters: Charlie (an extra), Simon (first A.D.), Clem (the director of the film), Fin (a young local, Sean´s friend), Caroline Giovanni (American star), Jock Campbell (one of the bodyguards of Caroline Giovanni) Mr. Harkin (Sean´s father) and Brother Gerard (local teacher). Klaus Seewald (hearing) plays the following characters: Jake (an extra), Aisling (third A.D.), Mickey (a very old local, was an extra over twenty years ago), Dave (a crew member), Sean (a young local, Fin´s friend), John (accent coach of Caroline Giovanni) and TV -reporter. A big crew of a film company occupies a small village. The idyllic environment of the villages is the ideal background for a film company from Hollywood to make here the new film hit. As extras Jake and Charlie are engaged and they have to see how the film crew is occupying their home village. Disillusioned Jake has returned from the U.S. and Charlie went bankrupt with his video store. Now both are working for 40 € a day as extras for three weeks. They see how the village is changed for the film. But the film crew, a Hollywood star, bodyguards, a very old extra, a drug dealer and young local who will commit suicide, are part of a tragic comedy of a small village, which is fighting for his identity. Since 1993 initiated by the deaf ARBOS – Company for Music and Theatre produces and presents professional theatre productions with deaf and hearing artists for deaf and hearing audience. ARBOS offers also a professional theatre education for the deaf. Since 1993 16 productions and five workshop programmes were developed and presented. In 2002 ARBOS performed with the comedy „The Strangers“ at the arts festival of „Deaf Way II“ in Washington D.C. and is one of the most innovative deaf theatres in the world. Four projects got awards as the EUROPEAN ART PRIZE of The FINANCIAL TIMES (Cerec-Award), the MAECENAS-Award and the EUROPASIEGEL for INNOVATIVE LANGUAGE PROJECTS. |

„The reception at the theatre“ The reception at the theatre offers both for the artists and the audience the possibility to meet each other. The theatre is changing to a place of communication between the artists and the audience. Spontaneously the artists are playing small dramas. There is no border between the artists and the audience. For four hours they all are one world. But it is also an opportunity for getting information and talking. Use these opportunities! |

„Rhymes III“ A play by Jindrich Zemanek, Music by Radim Hladík P.S.I. Deaf Theatre Brno (Czech Republic) Directed by: Jindrich Zemanek, Light design: Lubos Ruzicka Produced by: Dana Penazova Cast: Lucie Kastnerova, Marketa Maradova, Zlata Kurcova, Oldrich Bajer, Pavel Bartak, Martin Zelezny, Antonin Zraly, Erik Demko and Michal Brhel Influenced by the recognized tradition of the literature in the Czech Republic Jindrich Zemanek has created an impressive play. We see a number of minidramas about the Moravian Land, a chair, little birds, the marathon race, the charmer´s hat, the pencil, the shoes, the cap, the dream of life and a Fairy Tale. From these stories we can imagine the influence of some extraordinary poets like Franz Kafka, Bohumil Hrabal or Jaroslav Seifert. “Rhymes III” is the interesting search for new forms of dramas using signs and mimes to create new visual expressions on stage. The Moravian Land: A movement study of today, recent days and a long time ago, of the land of wine, sun and pure water. Chair: If a chair is not on the right place we can take it away or destroy it. But the chair in ourselves is hindering us. That situation makes this “chair” indestructible and omnipresent. This idea can destroy somebody or swallow somebody. Little Birds: A silent park in the time from spring to summer, loneliness and hovering birds; this is the common idea of an old man´s quiet days. The Marathon Race: Every race is a contest. And contest means different people and different ways of achieving their goals. There is a winner at the end and rarely someone asks how the winner has achieved his goal. The Charmer´s Hat: Clowns are entertaining people to make them laughing. But who knows the real feelings of a clown and his lonesome soul. The Pencil, The Shoes, The Cap: Rush and automatisation are the symbol of the present. But everybody should have the opportunity to stop, to look and to reflect what beautiful things around us. The Dream of Life: The story of life; things are common and special; the creation of a dough; now people come and go. Fairy Tale: Puppets has been invented to replace human actors. But in our fairy tale human actors are replacing the puppets. But changing actors into puppets and vice versa does not happen in this fairy tale… The Deaf Theatre P.S.I. in Brno exists since 1981. The best Czech deaf actors founded the theatre. The cast of the theatre consists of 21 actors. The theatre got awards in Italy, Monaco, USA, Spain and Germany. In Japan the P.S.I. Deaf Theatre got two times the Toyama Tiatf Award. 2002 the theatre presented at the arts festival of “Deaf Way II” in Washington the production “Dreams”, this production was presented at the 3rd European and International ARBOS Deaf Theatre Festival 2002 in Vienna. The P.S.I. Deaf Theatre is one of the best Deaf Theatres in the world. |

a spectacular environment: the circus. Two worlds are meeting in the
circus, one is deaf, and the other one is hearing. In the communication
between these two clowns are lot of absurd elements, because both
are using different techniques to be a clown, because Sign Language
is different from any spoken language. But this difference is the
base for a lot of misunderstanding in the dialogue of the clowns.
Such a dialogue can only happen in the world of a circus. |
| „The
rehearsal of a scene of a film“ A tragicomedy by Kurt Eisenblätter BERLINER GEHÖRLOSENBÜHNENCLUB (Germany) Directed and designed by: Kurt Eisenblätter Produced by: Harald Weickert Cast: Kurt Eisenblätter (The Star), Rolf Puttrich-Reignard (Director), Thomas Haut (Cameraman), Aron Schalk (A.D.) A western film is in production. The film crew prepares the
set. Lights and camera are on the set. Everything is prepared. The
director, the cameraman and the A.D. are waiting for the star. Some
times later the star is coming to the set. The director explains the
star the situation in the scene. The star should act as a cowboy,
who is a brutal murder of his rival. Everything is clear and there
should be no problem to shoot the scene. The first take is shooted,
but the star is not able to play how the director is expecting it.
So they have to do a lot of takes for this scene. Sometimes the star
is acting too soft, sometime he is acting too brutal, sometimes he
is tearing, sometimes he is laughing. The director is in despair.
But suddenly the star acts absolutely incredible perfect the scene.
The director congratulates enthusiastically. But the scene was not
shot. During the incredible numbers of repetition the cameraman falls
asleep. The director and the star wake him up and start discussing
why he felt asleep. Starting from just a harmless little scrap the
play takes a tragic ending. |
| „Concert“ Music in Sign Language with Mime and Dance NEW ART STUDIO Moscow (Russia) Directed by: Michael Semakov Stage, sound and light designed by: Andrej Nazarenko Produced by: Igor Golyak Cast: Anastasija Neshastnova, Irina Bakanova, Yuliana Pugach, Olga Melnikova, Max Tiunov, Valerij Zavodovsky, Aleksej Znamensky, Yevgenij Erovenkov. Deaf can sing with their hands ! This fact is presented in
the production “Concert”. Deaf actors connecting Sign Language with
mime and dance. In the production we can see also two famous Russian
songs in Sign Language “Working on an Object” and “The Song of Signs”.
The actors got with this programme in Russia a big publicity. The
performance was broadcasted for TV and some of the songs of the production
were transformed to video clips. One very important element of music
is the pulse-beat. He is the source of all music. And music first
comes from movement, every sound needs for the creation movement.
And movement is the missing link between music and Sign Language,
because the Sign Language of the Deaf is a visual “Language in the
Space”. The performance is supported by the Ministry of Culture of The Russian Federation and the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow. |

In his play “Uncle Vanja” Anton Chekhov describes the country life. An emeritus professor with a sickly capricious conceited and despotic character lives with his young second wife on the estate of his first deceased wife. The estate is for him like his personal one and he lives on the proceeds of this estate. On the estate of his first deceased wife her mother, the daughter and the brother (Uncle Vanja) are working for the famous and admired professor. They don´t take any care for themselves. But during the residence of the professor at the estate Uncle Vanja makes a shattering discovery: he comprehends that the bright professor has exploited for twenty-five years the knowledge and work from other people. The professor has used in his conversation only empty phrases without contents; he has stolen the knowledge from other persons and has presented this knowledge as his own one. The professor presents himself as a person who knows everything and misuses the feelings of two young women for his personal advantage. The absurd situation of a marriage is the focus of the play of Sergey Babajan. Resume of the situation: phrases and phrases and phrases, nothing more. In the direction of Michael Semakov both plays adapted to one play. The human existence is presented as a ridiculous one. The play of Anton Chekhov became world famous in the direction of Stanislavski. The adaption of both plays for the artistic programme of the NEW ART STUDIO is a symbol for the search of new expressions on the theatre in the connection with deaf actors. War“ Scenes, Texts and Poems by Georg Trakl, Georg Heym, August Stramm, Hugo Ball, Theo van Doesburg, Paul Scheerbart and the Italian Futurists Marinetti, Corra, Settimelli, Cangiullo, Chiti ARBOS – Company for Music and Theatre (Austria) Directed, designed and produced by: Herbert Gantschacher Translated into Sign Language and Sign Master: Horst Dittrich Cast: Georg Horngacher (deaf), Werner Mössler (deaf) and Alexander Mitterer (hearing) This theatre project connects the visions
of the artistic avant-garde, the critics and victims of war. We have
to differ very clear between the avant-garde (the forerunners of an
army) of the art and the modern art, because modern art and avant-garde
of the art is not the same. The avant-garde of art killed modern art.
“Avant-garde and modern art are two different stiles of art” reflects
the composer György Ligeti. The Italian Futurists themselves
saw them as such a kind of avant-garde. They dreamed the “dream of
the artistic war” and tried to transform their visions of war to art.
They started working with such transformations before the beginning
of World War I. They desired that Italy should as soon as possible
part of this “Great War”. But the real reality is that an artistic
war can be neither a vision nor a reality. Millions of people died.
Romain Rolland (a great pacifist and winner of the Nobel prize) described
in August 1918 “war as a disease which tortures Europe”. At around
the same time persons like Romain Rolland or the German doctor of
medicine physiologist Georg Friedrich Nicolai during World War I the
vision of a “Common House of Europe” and now 85 years this visions
could be a reality after a lot of horrible wars in the 20th century. |

us Stories!” with Luzerner Theater (Switzerland), Quest: arts for everyone (USA), Berliner Gehörlosen Bühnenclub (Germany), NEW ART STUDIO Moscow (Russia) and ARBOS – Company for Music and Theatre (Austria) Sign Language of the Deaf is a “Language in Space”. Deaf actors can tell and act marvellous dramatic stories with their hands at the same time. This artistic form of minidrama is a speciality of Deaf Artists and Deaf Theatres. This performance is created during the festival and demonstrates how deaf actors from Switzerland, USA, Germany, Russia and Austria are telling stories on the stage. |

Act I centers on the human fascination with flight. Successfully conquering flight, Act II sees how our ability to fly can lead to tragic results. Focusing on the horrific events of September 11 and their aftermath, the show looks at our ability to deal with death and also find a way to live. Wings features an ensemble of six performers who employ mime, gesture, sign language, dance, pedestrian movement, and a cappella singing in the show’s presentation. Conceived by Tim McCarty, Quest’s president and the show’s director, Wings also features an integrated production staff of deaf and hearing artists. Founded in 1997 and based in Lanham, Maryland, Quest is a group of
artists, educators, and dedicated volunteers representing a diverse
ethnic, cultural, and artistic panorama. All are committed to using
the arts to: promote understanding among all peoples, promote excellence,
and enable individuals who have been marginalized to realize their
full potential. Quest’s 30 Affiliate Artists represent a variety of
ethnicities, cultures, and art forms. Forty percent of the Affiliates
are artists who are deaf or artists with disabilities. Seventy percent
of the Affiliates are artists of colour. The company’s three divisions
reflect Quest’s multipronged, multileveled approach to employing the
arts to affect social, educational, and employment change. |

Literature Poetry and Sign Language“ Workshop with ARBOS – Company for Music and Theatre (Austria) Starting from the Sign Language the possibilities of translations of dramas, literature and poems into Austrian Sign Language will be the themes of this workshop. It is possible to translate every dramatic and literary and poetic form into Sign Language. But the act of translation into Sign Language for the stage is an act of artistic work and presents the Sign Language as an art form. So Sign Language brings new expressions into the world of theatre. Horst Dittrich, the translater and Sign Master will explain this with some example for a demonstration of the possibility for expressions through the act of translating. |

Deaf Theatre in Switzerland demonstrated on the example of the production
‚Wolf Child“ inspired by the film of François Truffaut“ Workshop with the LUZERNER THEATER (Switzerland) The main focus of the production „Wolf Child“ is how a majority communicates with minorities. In the beginning the “Wild Child” is an orphan. He is a human being but everybody looks to him like an animal, because the “Wild Child” got no influence from the civilisation and he could communication in the usual language of the majority. But the “Wolf Child” learned everything for surviving in the woods. But in the world of civilisation of the scientist Dr. Itard this knowledge of the “Wolf Child” is nothing worth. The scientist wants to find a way to develop one method of education, to socialize and “civilize” the “Wolf Child”. For that reason he has to transform him for the society. But the scientist forgets to respect his character and his knowledge from the life in the woods. “Wolf Child” is the first theatre production with professional deaf and hearing actors in Switzerland; it is a play for deaf and hearing actors and for soprano and for percussion. |

„Circus and Sign Language“ Workshop with DRAUMASMIDJAN (Iceland) The Circus is the main theme in the play of Margrét Pétursdóttir. The workshop presents how Sign Language influenced the development of the play. The desire of people for comic and eccentric situations is as old as the cultural civilisation. And since a long time ago clowns are travelling through the countries with changing characters. To be a clown is always also a wish to finalize a dream to finish an impossible mission. For that a lot of different characters and masques of clowns are existing. |

and visual theatre“ Workshop with the P.S.I. Deaf Theatre Brno (Czech Republic) Jindrich Zemanek developed in cooperation with the deaf actors a special technique of visual theatre. Signs and words are not the main focus during the process of rehearsing and developing. The structures of the plays are always based on literature. But these structures always remember to the visual structure of short stories, fables, fairy tales, legends and parables. From this point of view new dramatic forms for theatre can be found. |
| „The
development of tragicomic plays in Sign Language“ Workshop with GEHÖRLOSEN BÜHNENCLUB BERLIN (Germany) The deaf director and actor Kurt Eisenblätter can look back to long career. The deaf actor and writer Wilhelm Mertens started to establish again Deaf Theatre in Germany after the end of World War II in 1945, because during the dictatorship of the Nazis from 1933 to 1945 Mertens and the Gehörlosen Bühnenclub Berlin could not perform by reasons of censorship. Together with his hearing friend the director Weidemann Mertens created a new group of deaf actors. One of these actors was Kurt Eisenblätter. In 1961 the Berlin Wall was a reason that this theatre was closed again. But in 1958 in the eastern part of Berlin a Deaf Theatre was established at the General German Deaf Association in the former GDR. 1961 Kurt Eisenblätter was nominated as the artistic director of this theatre. In 1973 the Deaf Theatre was transformed to a pantomime theatre under the artistic direction of Volkmar Otte together with Kurt Eisenblätter (During the time of communism after World War II in the Eastern States of Europe the artistic expression of Deaf Theatre was assigned to pantomime theatre; but this assignment brought some misconception about Deaf Theatre, because Deaf Theatre is not pantomime theatre! Deaf Theatre is much more, because it is based on the language of the Deaf the Sign Language. Deaf Theatre has more artistic expressions than other forms of theatre, because the Sign Language of the Deaf is the best language on the stage of the theatre in the world!). As a follow up of the political change in the GDR in 1989 the organisations of the state of the GDR were dissolved, also the organisations that supported Deaf Theatre with grants were dissolved. In spring 1990 the “Gehörlosen Bühnenclub Berlin” was founded again. Now in this workshop Kurt Eisenblätter will talk about his experience as an actor (in his long career he acted also the characters of “Hamlet” by Shakespeare and “Faust” by Goethe). This important experience gave him the possibility to write plays. |

and the European Deaf Theatre Conference Vienna 2002“ TEATR 3 Szczecin (Poland) Since the European Deaf Theatre Conference in October 2001 in Vienna there is an excellent cooperation between TEATR 3 from Szczecin in Poland and ARBOS – Company for Music and Theatre, because the Deaf Theatre in Szczecin has a professional department for producing documentary films. Olgierd Koczorowski is a professional deaf cameraman and cutter. He made the film about the European and International Deaf Theatre Festival and the European Deaf Theatre Conference in Vienna 2003. The film is an excellent example how to make a documentary. |

the Moscow´s Artist´s Theatre to the NEW ART STUDIO or The
Russian tradition of theatre und the development of new forms of theatre
or When You enter the professional arena, You must be able to perform
ANYTHING!“ NEW ART STUDIO Moscow (Russia) In History the Russian theatre has created a lot of new forms of theatre. These form influenced theatres all over the world. So we could say, at the beginning of this development the name of Konstantin S. Stanislavski is important. He was the artistic director of the Moscow´s Artist´s Theatre and he connected the educational process with the development of new artistic techniques for the theatre. From this school the director Wsewolod E. Meyerhold, Alexander Tairov and Jevgeny Vahtangov got their inspiration for their own way of artistic work on the theatre. Especially the research work of Vahtangov was important for development of the Russian theatre in connection with the artistic educational process. He found a way between the “Theatre of Experience” of Stanislavski and the “Biomechanical Theatre” of Meyerhold. In his last years Vahtangov used the term of the “Phantastic Realism”. Coming from the experience of this tradition the director and theatre pedagogue Michael Semakov developed a training and educational method for deaf actors also in connection with the development of the search for new forms of theatre. Deaf students for theatre get their professional education at the „National Specialized Institute for Arts“ in Moscow. This institute is worldwide a unique institution. Conference, Continuation workshops for Deaf Artists) ARBOS – Company for Music and Theatre (Austria) in cooperation with Teatr 3 Szczecin (Poland), ZfK Berlin (Germany) and Draumasmidjan Reykjavik (Iceland) - The Sign Languages of Europe as a part of the Common House of Europe with the same rights - European Deaf Theatre as a part of the world of the arts of Europe - European Deaf Theatre Conference (to enrich the Deaf Theatre Network with presentation on the internet) - Theatre and workshops for Deaf and Hearing (to enrich the communication between these two worlds) - Deaf Theatre Workshops in schools - Sign Language and Deaf Theatre as a part of the European Integration - Professional Continuation workshops for Deaf Arts in Europe focussed on film and theatre - „Deaf Theatre Handbook Europe“ – production of the first book about Deaf Theatre in Europe „Languages are different point of views about the world“ says Alexander von Humboldt, the famous researcher on languages. This we can say also about the Sign Languages in Europe. They are all different in every country. The Sign Languages of the European countries are a part of the European languages and also part of the languages of minorities in Europe. That is the reason why these languages need security and a wider audience. For the continuing work for Deaf Theatre ARBOS was awarded in December 1999 in London with THE EUROPEAN ARTPRIZE OF THE FINANCIAL TIMES (Cerec-Award). The decision of the jury was given by the following reason: „A leading arts organisation are taking the work of deaf artists to a wider European Audience“. Goals of the project: Production of the „Deaf Theatre Handbook Europe“ the first book about Deaf Theatres in Europe (based on the 2001 made database of Deaf Theatres in Europe) starting with the European Deaf Theatre Conference, there will be also presented the continuation workshops for deaf arts in Europe. Another reason for the project is, that such a work is the best way to bring Deaf Theatre to a bigger audience and publicity. In the past ARBOS reached this goal for Deaf Theatres excellent. It is also important to enrich the communication between the European countries and to continue the ideas for the networking process. The production of the book „Deaf Theatre Handbook Europe“ will give Deaf Theatres in Europe their own place in the world of theatre and will provide informations about Deaf Theatre in Europe to a bigger public and to experts. It will demonstrate also the power of Deaf Theatre in Europe. Deaf Theatre will get an equal place as other forms of theatres in Europe. The continuation workshops will give deaf artists a new enrichment of their skills. In schools the project will be connected to deaf and hearing children. Deaf Theatre will become a bigger audience. The Deaf Theatre Conference will be one of the consequences to the way into the public. |

Heartfield. Fotomontagen 1928-1939“ „Do You want to be killed in a war again for the reason that the profits on the stock exchanges will increase ?” That is the title of a photomontage from the year 1932. Hellmut Franz Josef Herzfeld, who was born in 1891 in Berlin, did this artwork. During World War I the artist changed his name to John Heartfield as a protest against the war. Heartfield was all his life against the war. Heartfield warned before the dictatorship of the Nazis. He worked as an artist also against Hitler and he was a strong critic of Hitler. But he had to emigrate first to Prague and later to London. “One Man´s War against Hitler” was the headline of a poster of the Arcade Gallery in London in the year 1939, where the artwork of Heartfield was presented in an exhibition. In the year 1937 he warned: “Death to the polyps of war ! If they would be destroyed, then the sun will shine all the time”. Heartsfield died 1968 in Berlin. In context to the productions presented at the festival “War is …”, “Wings” and “Disease War” this exhibition is an excellent corresponding The interpreter Sabine Zeller will guide the tour through the museum and the exhibition in Sign Language. If before the beginning of World War I the war-monger would not have won over politics, so Europe and World would have another face today. In this project poets are presented, who were war-monger among the artists like the Italian Futurists but also victims of war like the Austrian poet, who committed suicide after he has seen the battle of Grodek 1914, or August Stramm, who died on the battlefield between the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, Germany on one side and Russia on the other side. see something You cannot see“ A Deaf Theatre Play for children, parents and teachers by Herbert Gantschacher ARBOS – Company for Music and Theatre (Austria) Directed, designed and produced by: Herbert Gantschacher Co Director: Georg Horngacher Cast: Ralph Gaderbauer Children´s poems are transformed to an interactive theatre play. For the development of deaf theatre it is important to bring Sign Language to children. And the best way doing this is through theatre productions and storytelling. That happens in the play “I can see something You cannot see”. The actor actively involve the audience, children are invited on stage to play with the actor. For the interpretation of the poems the actor uses mime and Sign Language. This ARBOS-production was awarded in 2002 with the EUROPASIEGEL for innovative language projects. |

in the Tramline 1 and Tramline 2“ 7th April 2003 – 11th April 2003 Tramline 1 & 2 starting at 10 am ARBOS – Company for Music and Theatre Directed and produced by: Herbert Gantschacher Managed by: Markus Knopp Stagemanager: Oliver Aitzetmüller Cast: Georg Horngacher (deaf) and Daniel Keberle (hearing) After the big success of the visible and invisible theatre project „Theatre Traps“ (the project got the MAECENAS-award 2002) on the lines of the subway of Vienna U 1, U 2, U 3, U 4 and U 6 produced in cooperation with the “Wiener Linien” and ARBOS – Company for Music and Theatre now a new project will be presented. The places in the year 2003 are not the subway but the tramlines 1 and 2. Actors are going with the tramway from station to station and perform at the stops for the passengers who leaving or entering the trains, for them maybe it could be a surprise. Hundred thousands of people are using the public traffic of the “Wiener Linien” daily. But public traffic is also an important place of communication. The Sign Language of the Deaf is the language of a minority. So in this way the Sign Language gets a bigger public audience. The actors are going with the tramway from station to station like all other passengers. In this moment the actors are invisible. But when the tramway stops, suddenly in few seconds a “Dadaistic” dialogue starts between the actors. So for passengers who are leaving or entering the tramway it could be a surprise to be confronted with this acting action and especially in Sign Language. The “Dadaistic” dialogue ends and the actors are going with the tramway to the next station for the next acting action. Till today the Sign Language of the Deaf in some countries are banned from official communication, because the Sign Language is not officially recognized as a language of a minority. Unfortunately the Republic of Austria is also of one of these countries. The Sign Language has all characteristics of a language. The Sign Language is a visual language and a body language (the mother of all languages). The Sign Language is a visual “Language in Space”, it is the best language used in the world of the theatre. The Sign Language is all countries a language of a cultural minority. Every country has it´s own Sign Language. The Sign Language uses mime, gesture and the hands. „Dada in Tramline 1 & 2“ is an artistic way of a minority into the public mainstream. The public traffic of Vienna is an opportunity to be in public. |
| „Speaking Hands, Speaking Bodies“ Deaf Theatre Workshops for Schools Hands are
important instruments of the human body, since mankind decided to
walk on two feet. Hands are used for example for eating, drinking,
writing, moving, carrying … The Sign Language of the Deaf uses gestures,
mimes and hands. So therefore the hands (and the eyes) are an important
part of the communication. They are part of the language, which is
the mother language of all languages. |
